LACE MAKERS CENSUS
The Lace Makers Census of Camariñas is not published due a law
existing in the country.We are not allow to publish the census with out
their permission.This permission was not asked by the Museum, because we
think is not necessary to make this information viewable.
However the Census is available for research studies and here you can
find a profile about it. The Council of Camariñas has got an old
census with almost 367 lace makers. Under the BLEN project the census was
renew and the names were upgraded. Typical problems were wrong addresses,
wrong phone numbers, non existing telephones, etc. In order to conduct the
survey, a formulaire was developed.This formulaire with little local changes
was used by all the partners of the BLEN project.
In the case of Camariñas that was asked to the lace makers:

The final number of lace makers in Camariñas on the 17 of April,
year 1999 was 651 plus 168 children. Just to make an easier understanding

The lace makers are leaving spread around in 7 towns or Parish.
Camariñas concentrate the 38% of the lace makers.
Camariñas has got 8 shops open to the public.
2 Associations joint the 10% of the census.
Ponte de Porto is the second larger town for lace in the area.
According with the historical documents published in mecam.net and in
blen.net, as in the old time Ponte do Porto holds his importance as both
lace producer and exporter behind Camariñas.

Lace is not only a hobby in Camariñas, is a way of leaving. Is
