At present instruction in bobbin lace making at Rauma is chiefly
given on courses at the Rauma Adult Education Institute. In addition,
for those people for whom lace making is a hobby, there are many
different lace making circles that meet regularly in different
parts of the town. On the courses, the students concentrate on
learning one particular thing at a time whereas in the hobby
circles the learning is more informal. The initial instruction
follows a certain programme, but those who are more advanced
can choose patterns to their own liking. The most important aspect
of these courses and the lace making circles is that the tradition
and skills of lace making are passed on to the next generations.
About 150 students take part in the courses every year.
There are also lace making courses for children, either in
school clubs, oras separate courses arranged by the Rauma Lace
Makers' Association.
Lace making courses
Summer courses in lace making for all those interested in
this skill have also been arranged by different organizations
at different times. Such courses have been arranged for example
by the summer university and the Christian Adult Education Institute
at Eurajoki.
There have been several plans to develop the art of lace making
at Rauma to a professional level, but so far these plans have
not been realised. The latest plans call for this instruction
to be set up with the support of EU finance.
The insertion of lace trimming
One frequently recurring theme for these courses is how to
fix the lace trimming onto other textiles, and the making of
a lace tablecloth. Many people are wary of attempting this, but
on the course these different phases of the work are taught one
by one. Many people think it easier to sew the lace on with a
sewing machine. However, once you have learned the different
stages of sewing lace, you can even make a lace trimmed tablecloth
at home.
