LACEMAKING AS A FAMILY TRADITION
* LACEMAKER MISSIS ESTER AALTONEN 85 YEARS
On Sundays for many years the lacemaker Ester Aaltonen demonstrated
bobbin lacemaking in the lace room of the Rauma Museum at the
Old Town Hall. Rauma Museum is honouring her by presenting an
exhibition called "Lacemaking as a family tradition - Lacemaker
Ester Aaltonen 85 years". The exhibition is on show in Marela,
a shipowner's house dating from the turn of the last century,

TRADITIONAL LACE MAKING FROM VILA DO CONDE, PORTUGAL
The Rauma Museum first arranged an exhibition featuring foreign
lace in the Old Town Hall in 1978. The exhibition was such a
success that it started a tradition. These informative exhibitions
have greatly increased local awareness of foreign bobbin lacemaking.
This summer the museum will exhibit lace from Vila do Conde,
Portugal.

THE JUBILEE EXHIBITION OF RAUMA LACEMAKERS GUILD
For fifty years the Rauma Lacemakers Guild have promoted bobbin
lacemaking. Old traditional lace patterns have been redrawn and
printed. It is possible to buy pieces of lace, patterns and other
lacemaking equipment from Pits-Priia, the lacemakers' own shop
in the Old Town, near the Art museum. For Lace Week they will
arrange a jubilee exhibition in Poselli.

LACE AND ROMANCE
The exhibition "lace and Romance" presents a selection
of the most beautiful romantic laces made in different parts
of Finland. The curator of the exhibition is Kirsi-Marja Siltavuori-Illmer.

INTERNATIONAL LACE DESIGN COMPETITION
In past times bobbin lace was a sign of distinction and status.
Delicate lace was more valuable than precious gems. The exhibition
comprises international lace designs participating in the competition
for romantic lace to embellish the gown of the registrar officiating
at civil weddings in the Rauma region. After the selection of
the winning design a competition will be arranged for fashion
designs students in Lahti to design the
registrar's gown.

JEWELLERY
An exhibition of jewellery designed and made by artists and
goldsmiths from the Rauma region. Here you can find jewellery
designed with motifs of Rauma lace and unique jewellery designed
for patrons of the ships made at Hollming Shipyard in Rauma.

ENJOY LIFE WITH BOBBIN LACE
LACEMAKER KERTTU ARVO
Kerttu Arvo is a specialist in Rauma bobbin lace. She has
been teaching lacemaking at the Rauma Adult Education Centre
for many years. During the Lace Week an exhibition presenting
lace that she has made will be on show at Old Rauma Visitor's
Centre

THE NIGHT OF BLACK LACE
The picturesque wooden houses of the Old Town offer a splendid
setting for the summer carnival celebrated in the streets of
Rauma. The Night of Black Lace is a kind of folk festival with
varied events and small cultural venues
