Torchon laces were made in Rauma as well as in the most lace
making areas around Europe, but there were made fine ground laces
in Rauma too. In Finland Rauma was the only place for production
of ground laces. The laces used for bonnets were just ground
laces. The same patterns were made both as complicated double
ground laces as more simple variants.
The lace makers tried to response the markets providing both
cheaper and more expensive alternatives to the lace users.
The Rauma lace makers followed the chances in the fashion.
In the beginning of 19th century many blonder laces were made.
In 1830ties and 1840ties
The Finnish Society of Advancing of Farm Management imported
many new lace models from Saxony. These laces were suitable for
table clothes and bed linnen.
They were made of thicker thread, as the laces, which had
been used, for bonnets or lace trimmed caps. The patterns had
many leave-motives. The patterns are still popular among the
lace makers.
In the beginning of 20th century some activists tried to get
the lace makers of Rauma to use new imported patterns. The laces
were in fashion again, but only some people wanted to have hand
made laces for their dresses, when the machine made were much
cheaper
The lace makers in Rauma classify the lace patterns after
the motifs to spider laces, leaf laces and gepuire laces.
